CHAPTER 25

I will never be able to erase from my memory the picture of Birkenau, where one year seemed a thousand years, where thousands of men and women from all parts of the world found an untimely end.

Five years seem a short space of time, but more crimes were committed during that period than during the past five centuries. An atomic bomb is very small, but it contains enough energy to blow an entire city into pieces. In those five years more diabolic schemes were devised than in the past five centuries. Christ was hung on the Cross again and again, every time His Commandment of Love was jeered at by the fiends marked with the sign of the swastika.

During those five years, Germany became an example of what might become of a people who followed the wrong path of rabid nationalism for 700 years. The germ of Nazism found an excellent breeding ground in Germany. In that country there will always be a chance for men of Hitler's type, unless the entire German nation kneels down at the feet of the Cross and makes a sine are Act of Contrition.

But there is no sign of such a spiritual rebirth.
